Let's imagine we knew nothing of Beethoven… And now we put on this CD: the 7th Symphony, conducted by the wonderfully mad conductor Teodor Currentzis…We will think after only a few minutes: this music is the greatest thing in the world. We would never want to hear anything else

Beethoven
Symphony No 7 in A Major Op 92 II Allegretto
Mahler
Currentzis shapes the music in forensic detail, luxuriating in an orchestra full of wind soloists who never seem to need to breathe.

Symphony No. 6
in A Minor II Scherzo
Tchaikovsky
The finale opens with an exhalation from Currentzis, translated by the strings into a memorial of overlapping sighs and then punctuated by what sounds like the bass drum from the march. At this point the Berlin studio acoustic expands to cavernous dimensions to contain and then bury the symphony’s last rites.

Teodor Currentzis performs as if the opera has been restudied and rebuilt from scratch, with every detail weighed and contextualised within the arc of the whole. Currentzis’s period-instrument ensemble musicAeterna offers a joyous blend of style and spontaneity. Each successive scene seems to bristle with transparency and intimacy, with some deliciously free fortepiano ornaments.
