Details

The musicAeterna residencies in Vienna and Hamburg will feature choral masterpieces by the 20th-century Russian classical composer Alfred Schnittke along with a new composition by conductor and composer Gregor Mayrhofer. Schnittke’s Requiem of 1975 and Concerto for chorus set to the verses by Grigor Narekatsi from the Book of Lamentations, written in 1984–1985, as well as the highlight of the Residencies – Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony – represent messages to all mankind and deal with the themes of life and death in a deeply philosophical context.

The young and highly sought-after German composer, conductor, and pianist Gregor Mayrhofer who regularly collaborates with musicAeterna will enter into a dialogue with Beethoven and Schnittke. His latest opus Recycling Concerto is written for a symphony orchestra and percussion made from garbage: plastic and glass bottles, iron cans, flower pots, coffee capsules, etc. The witty light composition is entrusted with a global mission – to spread a message about the proximity of an environmental catastrophe.
