Dmitry Shelkovin

In the choir since 2022

He studied programming at the Moscow State Mining University, then at the Baltic State Technical University “Voenmeh” in St. Petersburg. He graduated from the Conducting Department of the Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg Music College. He studied at Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory.

He worked as an artist of the vocal ensemble “Resonance” under the direction of Mikhail Serkov. Since 2015 he has been the artistic director and conductor of the student choir of the St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University. Since 2019 he has been working as a choirmaster at the Rimsky-Korsakov Music School (St. Petersburg). Since 2020 he has been the resident conductor and chief choirmaster of the ClassicElectric project. He is the co-author of the Eden Illusion project (Saint Petersburg, 2021), and the co-founder and conductor of the Attaque de Panique post-choir.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THE WORLD OF MUSIC?

After school, I went to study to be a computer programmer. Soon I realized that my soul yearned for music, so I left the institute and entered a music college, then a conservatory. In fact, music is very close to mathematics, so it is not sufficient to rely solely on knowledge of the humanities to perform it. It is important to have at least a basic understanding of mathematics and a keen sense of timing.

HOW DID YOU GET TO KNOW THE MUSICAETERNA CHOIR?

The first piece I heard performed by musicAeterna was the opera Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell. This very composition was the first one for me to perform as a permanent member of the choir. So far, my one of the most frequently listened to albums is a recording of this opera conducted by Teodor Currentzis.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?

It seems that there is nothing in my life apart from music, but sometimes I still need to switch. I like to go out of town, to stay in the country. I hope that during the winter holidays I'll get a chance to go out into nature. PlayStation games help me reboot and distract from the music in my head. Of these, I enjoy football the most.
