Program
The Music Dimension is a project where visual arts meet music. A new series of meetings is dedicated to the exhibitions of Ivan and Mikhail Morozov brothers’ collection at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts and Sergei Shchukin’s collection at the Hermitage.
Both the Morozovs and the Shchukins were two powerful Old Believer dynasties, and their lifestyle was a special one from a religious, ideological, cultural, and musical perspectives. What is the difference between the Old Believers’ and the Orthodox traditions, what did it mean for future merchants and collectors, how does the music of the Old Believers sound and what meanings does it contribute to one’s life? These issues will be discussed at the first meeting of the Music Dimension project by a musicologist, a paleographer, the researcher of the ancient Russian singing art, associate professor of the St. Petersburg Conservatory Florentina Panchenko. The ensemble of the Research Laboratory of Russian Musical Medieval Studies of the St. Petersburg Conservatory ‘In Rospev’ (Инъ роспевъ) will illustrate her theses.
