musicAeterna Cinema: The Word by Dreyer

Details

Music can be appreciated in a more profound and sophisticated way when it is paired with other art forms. Accordingly, musicAeterna’s residency includes a mix of exhibitions, cinema live concerts and discussions. During the residency in Lucerne, the choir opera ‘Tristia’ will be combined with two works by outstanding filmmakers.

‘The Word‘ (1955) is one of the best films by Carl Theodor Dreyer, the Danish visionary of world cinematography. The liberal adaptation of a drama by Kaj Munk, playwright, pastor and anti-fascist, follows the lives of the Borgen family in their search for God. Pure and absolute faith in God, unfettered by logic, reveals the true light in accordance with Kierkegaard’s philosophy.

Intense performances by Henrik Malberg, Preben Lerdorff Rye and Birgitte Federspiel are backed up by Henning Bendtsen’s outstanding camera work. Using expressive light and shadow contrasts , the dramaturgy leads to a radical and emotional climax.

‘The Word‘ has rightfully won numerous awards including the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and the Golden Globe. However, the film’s impact on cinematography goes far beyond any awards.
