A collaboration between musicAeterna and Con Spirito
The new collaboration between musicAeterna and the Con Spirito music lectorium is witnessing our preparations for the premiere of Dmitri Shostakovich’s milestone chamber piece: Piano Quintet in G Minor, Op. 57. In the first part of the lecture, musician and journalist Lyalya Kandaurova discusses the incredible fate of the score.
How does the Quintet (which was written after the “Chaos instead of music” article and before the war) manage to combine the Soviet with the German, neo-barocco with social realism, light-hearted lyricism with monumental glory? Is it possible to perceive Shostakovich’s music beyond the context of the country’s history and the composer’s own life story? If so, is it actually needed? All these questions — and more — are the focus of the first part of the lecture.
