Program

Gustav Mahler
Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor (1901-1902)

Alexey Retinsky
“Anaphora” for Symphony Orchestra

Details

Each Mahler’s symphony plunges us into a world of great sincerity and depth, raising questions that can’t be answered unequivocally, even in a hundred years. To realize his ideas, Mahler used the maximum capabilities of the symphony orchestra, demanding excellent quality and the best preparation from it. The musicAeterna orchestra under Teodor Currentzis has performed Mahler’s symphonies on various stages over the years, and the Fifth has become one of the most notable events in this cycle. The grand five-part structure of the Fifth Symphony includes a long journey from the Funeral March to the seething finale – perhaps a naive in its finality but sincere attempt to resolve the tragic conflict with the outside world.

This time, the symphony will be for the first time performed in dialogue with a contemporary work by Alexey Retinsky, specially written for this event. Composer’s work Anaphora is created for a large symphony orchestra, an electric guitar, three semantrons and a hundred water whistles. Such a combination of a classically established ensemble with atypical instruments is associated with a dramatic idea – a qualitative transition to a new state due to quantitative accumulation, as if tearing the familiar orchestral fabric from the inside. We escape the usual coordinate system, going beyond the boundaries of legalized temperament and timbre hierarchy. And as it turns out, the derailed train is equipped with wings.
