The final unit of the Gifts of Byzantium, dedicated to the musical art, begins on March 28. The lecture Byzantine Liturgical Reading and Singing: from Origins to Tradition will be delivered by Irina Shekhovtsova, Candidate of Sciences in Art History, Associate Professor of the Music History Department at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music, Associate Professor of the Department of Music History and Theory, Faculty of Sacred Music, Saint Tikhon’s Orthodox University of Humanities.

Details

On the basis of historical sources, as well as contemporary living tradition, the lecturer will analyze the main distinctive features of Byzantine church reading and singing practices. Particular attention will be paid to such topics as musical liturgical reading and ekphonetics, “angelic chant” and the church singing canon, the octoechos system, the oral and written tradition, hymnography and melurgy, neume notation and music theory, the main periods and outstanding masters of church singing.

The lecture will be illustrated by artwork and musical examples.
