Program

What connected the great Austrian composer and conductor Gustav Mahler with Russia and St Petersburg? What attracted him to a foreign country? How did the Russian capital salute him, and how was his art received by the Russian audience? Daniil Petrov, one of Russia’s leading researchers of Mahler’s life and work, Candidate of Art History and Associate Professor of the Moscow Conservatory, will answer these questions with a panorama of facts and observations concerning:
— Mahler’s artistic biography (including his tours in Moscow and St. Petersburg),
— people close to Mahler, who lived and worked in St. Petersburg,
— Mahler’s views on Russian art and literature,
— the perception of his music by Russian musicians and critics.
