A major vocal-symphonic cycle dedicated to different guises of death is an unprecedented phenomenon in the music of the 20th century. The poems by Lorca, Apollinaire, Rilke, and Küchelbecker chosen by Dmitri Shostakovich for his Symphony No. 14 form a suite of eleven movements, and it took some time for the composer himself to call it a symphony.
