Lecture 3: The Inception of Christian Monasticism (4th – 5th centuries)
Monasticism as a special institution has been documented since the 320s. According to indirect data, it can be assumed that it appeared at the end of the 3rd century. However, according to the author of the lecture, patrologist Vadim Lurie, the prototype of monasticism could be seen in earlier teachings. The third lecture of the cycle The Teachings of the Church Fathers is about the ideals of monastic life and monasticism as an institution.
