Program
Selected issues of the popular Soviet documentary film magazine.
Details
The film, presented by Kseniya Golubovich and Dina Karaman in a performance lecture form at the IV Moscow International Experimental Film Festival, and later screened at the Message to Man film festival, is assembled from selected episodes of a popular Soviet newsreel. This documentary footage gets a new sound design.
In the state archives, the recent past becomes a monolith, consisting of an endless string of silent images, tightly stitched with the the narrator’s voice and music, subtly playing with emotions. Now the author proposes to eliminate this component.
Instead of the original soundtrack, we hear the meditative noise of the film strip mixed live and watch the flickering images of the past, that, perhaps, may enchant us today only when muted.
