The cycle of chamber concerts “Saint Petersburg Union of Composers at Dom Radio” was created on the initiative of Teodor Currentzis, who joined the Union of Composers at the end of 2021. The eight concerts of the cycle will feature chamber compositions by about fifty active members of the Union of Composers of Saint Petersburg. Each concert will feature works by six composers of different generations. The authors themselves select compositions to be performed at Dom Radio. The curators of the cycle, the soloists of the musicAeterna orchestra Vladislav Pesin and Nikolai Mazhara arrange the programmes in such a way so as to present the diverse palette of Saint Petersburg academic music life with utmost impact.
In the cycle’s first concert, the chairman of the Union of Composers of Saint Petersburg, Grigoriy Korchmar, comments on the music of the Baroque composer-mystic Heinrich Schütz in the musical dialogue “Jesus and Maria”. Another representative of the older generation of the Union of Composers, Leonid Rezetdinov, engages in dialogue with the American classic of the XX century George Crumb. In his “Crumb’s Cosmos”, the First Notebook of the piano “Macrocosmos” has been expanded into an ensemble composition and is provided with the author’s “notes in the margins”.
Mid-generation representatives of the Union of Composers offered Dom Radio works in the spirit of “modern tonal music”. This non-scientific, but high-capacity definition covers a variety of styles that are based on patterns familiar to any philharmonic listener. The clarity and comparative simplicity of presentation mark two opuses, very different in musical language – both the suite from the fairy-tale opera “The Tale of Wings” by Svetlana Nesterova, and Mikhail Krutik’s plays “Collisions” and “Stratosphere”, which balance between minimalism and brutalism of Xenakis.
The younger generation of the Saint Petersburg Union of Composers is represented in the first concert of the cycle by two names. Anna Kuzmina presents “Mirror Suite”, where, in her own way, with crystal clarity, she interprets the same poems by Federico Garcia Lorca that formed the basis of Andrei Volkonsky’s suite of the same name (1959–1960). To conclude the concert, the Sonata for violin and piano by Sergei Oskolkov Jr. will be performed – a work that is classic in its form and fresh in its content.
