Purgatory did not appear immediately in Western Christian theology. From the “cleansing fire” mentioned in the 6th century by Pope Gregory I to the dogma of the Council of Trent at the end of the 16th century, Catholic eschatology has gone a long way. Even today, the idea of posthumous absolution from “light” sins is not so obvious; in particular, Protestants and Orthodox Christians question it.
Father Yuri (Dorogin), a priest of St. Catherine Parish on Nevsky Prospect, will tell more about the concept of purgatory in the Western Christian tradition.
