Details

Franz Schubert wrote the only string quintet in the last year of his life. He chose a very unusual instrumentation adding a second cello to the string quartet, which is why this work is often called the “cello” quintet. For a long time this pinnacle of the chamber-instrumental repertoire of the early Romantic era remained unknown: the quintet was first performed only in 1859, and published in 1853.

Along with the quintet, Schubert worked on the last three piano sonatas and the vocal cycle “Swan Song”. Three songs from the cycle in the version for mezzo-soprano and string quintet with two cellos – including the famous “Serenade” – will be performed as a commentary and foreword to the Quintet in C major.

Participants:

Elena Tokareva, Andrej Roszyk, Yana Shchegoleva, Evgeny Shchegolev, Andrei Efimovsky, Evgeny Rumiantsev
