Unusual Summer is built from footage from a conventional CCTV camera installed in one of the courtyards of the Israeli city of Ramla. The lens captures the everyday life of neighbors and bystanders – moments that are mostly empty and bland, and vanishing into a thin air but life is stuffed with them.
The screening of Unusual Summer opens the new season of the film laboratory at Dom Radio. The laboratory will continue to introduce the audience to rare films and video art, from parallel cinema examples to works by contemporary artists who continue the tradition of analog abstract cinema. The new season’s program includes premieres and rare archival works.
Tikhon Pendurin, curator of the film laboratory program, says, ‘Cinema means light, flicker, thoughts, dreams, video, frames, sound, now cinema is returning to its origins, to a man with a movie camera, shall we try to figure out what cinema is?’
