Dmitry Shostakovich
String Quartet No. 3
String Quartet No. 8
Details
musicAeterna orchestra soloists Ivan Subbotkin (violin), Dmitry Borodin (violin), Nail Bakiev (viola) and Rabbani Aldangor (cello) will perform two works by Dmitri Shostakovich at Dom Radio.
⠀
The Third Quartet is the composer’s only work written in 1946, shortly after the war. All five movements of the quartet are united by sharp drama and assertive dissonance, yet each of them offers a new key and daring combinations of instrumental voices.
⠀
The Eighth Quartet was composed much later, in the summer of 1960, in just a few days, when Shostakovich visited Dresden, the jewel of Saxony, which had been razed to the ground during World War II. The composer dedicated the score “to the victims of fascism and the war”. Quartet No. 8, however, holds many references and symbols, from the monogram “DSCH” to a funeral song and a revolutionary anthem, all of which encourage researchers to look for overtones in this piece.
